Longuich
Longuich: A great place for wine lovers!
Longuich is a small charming town in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, located just ten minutes from the historic city of Trier. With a population of around 1350 people, it is my hometown and the place where I spent most of my life.
If you are interested in experiencing authentic German culture and traditions, Longuich is a great destination, especially for those who appreciate fine wine. From traditional festivals to scenic vineyard hikes, there is something to do here for everyone.
Some good links for more information about Longuich, especially historic information and information about our famous Riesling wine, check out the links below:
To get better insights of our beautiful little town, here is a video tour from YouTube:
Longuich has a very interesting location, since we are very close to Trier, but also close to the border of Luxembourg and France, which makes a visit even more interesting. To visualize it even better, here is the map of where the town is located:
Now let's move on to the most interesting part of this blog post, what is there to do in Longuich? Since we are located right in the middle of two mountain ranges, Eifel and Hunsrück, we are surrounded by vineyards, so most of the activities are related to wine making and even better, wine drinking!
1. Wine tasting at local wineries
Since Longuich is a part of the famous Mosel wine region, we have a lot of wineries in our little town. You can visit some of those wineries and try the main grape variety offered there, Riesling wine. Little tip: Even if they do not offer formal, official wine tastings, they are often happy to do it informally, which makes the experience even better!
Some places you could visit are "Wein im Turm", "Weingut Longen Schlöder" and "Die alte Burg".
2. Cycling along the Mosel river
Because of our location right next to the Mosel river, which is surrounded by vineyards, it offers a beautiful scenic experience. Many places offer bikes to rent, to make a cycling tour along the river. That is also a perfect opportunity to ride to surrounding towns and see what they have to offer.
Here is a bike rental place, so you can save that time:
3. Visiting the Roman Villa (villa urbana)
You will have the opportunity to visit an old roman townhouse and explore the reconstructed bath complex. The Roman villa in Longuich dates back to the 2nd century AD, and was once a large luxurious estate, probably owned by a wealthy Roman from nearby Trier. Today, you can still see a reconstructed bathhouse with hot, cold and warm rooms, as well as part of the heating and water system, to see how advanced the Roman technology was.
It is located in the middle of the vineyards and offers a nice view over the Mosel valley, making it a nice and relaxing stop.
4. Boat trip on the Mosel
As mentioned before, Longuich is located right next to the Mosel river. You can take a cruise starting in Longuich and enjoy the view through the Mosel valley. They offer food and drinks during the trips, which makes the tour even more enjoyable. Sometimes, special events, like night or music tours are available, depending on what you are interested in.
Tickets and times can be found under the following link:
5. Take a day trip to Trier
Trier is the next biggest city close to Longuich, and is only about 10 minutes away, very easy to reach with train and bus. It is Germany’s oldest city, founded by the Romans, over 2000 years ago. It is famous for its well - preserved Roman landmarks, like the Porta Nigra, ancient baths, and a beautiful historic old town. Besides the many sights that Trier offers, there are also several restaurants offering traditional food and drinks (besides wine) from the Mosel region, like Flieten and Viez, which are very much worth trying.
If I had to choose one thing to do in Longuich, it would definitely be a wine tasting at a local winery. Growing up here, I have always been surrounded by vineyards, and wine culture is a big part of everyday life.
My personal tip: Do not be afraid to ask questions, and try different types of Riesling, you might be surprised at how different they can taste!
